A Familiar City Called New York

Storytime: Against my better judgement I got into an Uber with a crazy lady. I’ll explain – Mutay and I had just braved a 12hr+ coach journey from Toronto to New York and I wasn’t really feeling to search for the subway to trek all the way to Brooklyn. So, I ordered an Uber. The Uber came pretty quick – he parked, came to help us load our suitcases in the trunk and at this point, I could see he was talking, but I thought he was on the phone or something. Lo and behold when we open the car door, who is sitting there? The previous passenger he had picked…

    The Food Diaries // 019

“Food, in the end, in our own tradition, is something holy. It’s not about nutrients and calories. It’s about sharing. It’s about honesty. It’s about identity”. ~ Louise Fresco It has been a hot minute since I last posted an entry to The Food Diaries! Last November, I was invited to Lotus Bar to try out their new Christmas canapés. I also had the opportunity to try out one of their Christmas cocktails, as well! Located on Clapham High Street, Lotus Bar specialises in Italian food making an emphasis on unique flavours. Their recipes come from family secret ingredients and I could definitely tell this when I got to try their…

I’ve been to eat in the Shard one other time and that’s because I won a WeSwap competition and got a £100 voucher for Hutong. (PS. We went over the £100 and had to pay extra, but what did you really expect from me?) Eating in the Shard is the pinnacle of fancy living. High rise restaurants with a 360º view of London? Yeah, you know you’re living the good life. Especially when you have to pay for the water… So, my mother turned 60 last July and you only turn 60 once, right? She decided she wanted to live her best life and so she left it to me…

Feed me tapas and I’m yours forever. In fact, feed me tapas and cocktails, and I will definitely be yours forever. Brixton has a plethora of restaurants to eat at and one day I will eat at all of them. Located inside Brixton Market, Seven at Brixton is a tapas and cocktail bar serving breakfast, lunch and evening tapas. With its mismatched tables and graffiti decor, it’s a cosy little place. Downstairs has an open bar area with seating, which also gave off a rustic feel. It reminded me of this little bar my friends and I stumbled upon when we were in Barcelona. Upstairs are four different rooms that serve…

    Spooktacular Halloween Make Up Class

I haven’t always ‘celebrated’ Halloween. I remember when I was younger, my mum never used to let us go trick or treating because she didn’t believe in Halloween and she’s quite a strict Catholic. However, over the years I’ve found myself actually doing something for Halloween now – whether it be fancy dress or just going out with friends, I love going out on this spooky night! When I got an email from Joe Blogs about a Halloween make up class, I jumped at the chance to attend. Located in the rather lush Thistle Holborn hotel, bloggers were treated to devilishly good food and drink, plenty of laughs and a…

    Carnival Fiesta

¡Arriba! Everyone loves a good fiesta, and what with Christmas coming up now is always a good reason to party. Instead of the usual mistletoe-tinsel-snow theme, why don’t you go for a carnival theme – something that will get you in the mood for summer. (Admittedly, I am more of a summer person, but Christmas is always still much fun (except for the cold)) Thanks to Thomas Cook Airlines, I was invited to their Blogger Bash at Barrio East in Shoreditch back in October and I honestly had the best time ever. Carnival is always something to look forward, especially around August time when London plays host to Notting Hill Carnival.…

    The Food Diaries // 006

This will probably be the last food post I do for New York. I would talk about The Halal Guys, but there’s only so much I can write about them. Basically, it’s chicken over rice and a helluva lot of special sauce. It’s soo good and so cheap, and it will fill you up! Anyway, the last place I’ll be writing about is Dallas BBQ. They have several branches, but I visited the one in Brooklyn and can I just say it was the bomb diggity. I actually visited twice during my stay in New York because it was just that good. It wasn’t too far from where my auntie…

    I Don’t Know About You…

Now, let’s begin. Well, guys. I made it to the ripe old age of 22, somehow. I’m not even exaggerating when I say it’s been a hell of a year since my 21st. Nevertheless, you live and you learn. I had a really good birthday and it was much more toned down from last year. Must be a sign I’m getting old. I opted for a family dinner with the inclusion of Mutay and another one of my closest friends. We all went to a Filipino restaurant called Lutong Pinoy for a Kamayan dinner. Kamayan means to eat with your hands and that’s exactly what we did. You reserve ahead…
