Cultivating Positive Thinking

… can be difficult especially in the age of social media. So often, I’ve scrolled through my Instagram feed or Twitter timeline and felt myself sinking into an abyss because I see that people are having a better run at life than I am. But then I remember that social media is a highlight reel, and unless they turn around and show it then I’m not going to see that person’s bad days. 

But how to cultivate positive thinking when my phone is an extension of my hand and I have no self-control to speak of yet, so can’t just switch off just like that? I try to use it to my advantage. I listen to podcasts that get me pumped throughout the week (The Receipts Podcast, Say Your Mind, 2 Dope Queens (as of recent)) and I try to focus on social media posts that talk about the person’s achievements or specifically positive thinking.

Outside of that, if I’m feeling down I resort to my go-to definitely going to put me in a positive mood – reading. My cousin recently gifted me Lilly Singh’s book ‘How To Be A Bawse’ (thank you so much, bby girl, I love you, you the best) and whilst the majority of it is stuff I already know, the way she writes make it so relatable and got me thinking, “Okay, Chynna. Don’t just soak up this advice. DO something with it.”

This past week has been so up and down internally for me. So despite getting good news during the middle of the week, I was still in a foul mood all day. It wasn’t until I listened to something that my mood immediately lifted. I ended the day laughing and smiling and feeling so inspired. It’s amazing how a little thing can immediately turn your mood around.

It’s not going to be easy to be in a positive mindset 24/7. Allowing yourself to have a ‘bad’ day, so to speak, is still good for you. Just to acknowledge that these are feelings you are allowed to have. 

Small ways to cultivate positive thinking:

  • Listen to a funny podcast like 2 Dope Queens
  • Read a book and get lost in a new world
  • Write down what you’re grateful for
  • Crank up some happy music and have a boogie
  • Read more of my blog ?

    Social media really is a highlight reel! I’m definitely the type to only share the good and fun parts of my life, and keep the negative things to myself. I like that you have a list of things to do to get back into a positive mindset. It’s a good thing to have and turn to. When I need to think positively, I often turn to meditation or focusing on a hobby I like!

    I’d like to highlight this because it’s so true! Of course, I’m all for positive thinking, but like I always say, “Sometimes, it’s okay to not be okay.” Having bad days is normal and it’s also perfectly normal to feel angry, frustrated, or sad about it! We’re humans, and these emotions are natural to us so we need to allow ourselves to feel these emotions.

    With that said, allowing yourself to feel these emotions doesn’t mean that you have to dwell on them forever! After you acknowledge these feelings, you must do something about them and that’s where positivity comes in – rising against the negativity and living life the best that you can <3

    Oh yeah, I used to be so jealous of seeing my childhood friends in the Philippines always traveling but then I realized… I’m probably not seeing the whole pictures. Besides, I’m guilty of not showing my struggles on social media. And I love that last suggestion on your list ;D

    You’re on point about social media being a place to share highlights rather than the bad things in our lives. I know I do that! But like you, when I see the others doing great things and look at my own selves, I can’t help but feel down, too. But then I remind myself of what I have done and seen, and we all go through life at our own pace and rate.

    Positive thinking is so hard to do. The way I see it is that it’s okay to have both positive and negative thoughts — just don’t like them go out of hands.

    I mentally go through what I am grateful and that gives me the perspective to really do be thankful to what I have. There are worser things to have to go through, and I know that my rough moments are nothing compared to what others may go through.

    It really does take effort to cultivate positive thinking, but I’m glad you found a few things that work for you ☺️ I think that using your phone for GOOD is a great idea to practice doing. It can be hard to let go of your phone sometimes but if you have access to a lot of things, then why not find a way to make it work positively for you? ?

    I think that going to the gym and rock climbing puts me in a positive mood, I feel like I’m doing something for myself, encountering challenges, and overcoming those challenges. I can’t really name a lot of things that instantly put me in a good mood but there are a lot of things that improve my mood if I am feeling shitty, haha.

    It always always used to get to me when I would see all my high school friends getting married and having kids and landing the jobs of their dreams. I would already be having a bad day then I would see that and it would just bring me down even further. I’m married myself now but still seeing their children and their homes gets to me. On the one hand I am so happy for them for their success but at the same time I am sometimes insanely jealous of it as well. Its hard when my husband and I want kids so bad and its rough seeing all my friends have them and us running out of time but still trying. I try to think positive but yeah, sometimes it’s really hard.
